Total synthesis and antiviral activity of indolosesquiterpenoids from the xiamycin and oridamycin families

Using a single strategy to make a number of related intermediates is a useful strategy in the total synthesis. Here, the authors report the synthesis of a number of natural products, employing two diastereomerically complementary metal-catalyzed cyclizations as the key step to access a number of frameworks.

Commensal viruses maintain intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes via noncanonical RIG-I signaling

The impact of the commensal intestinal virome on health and immunity has been relatively little studied. Zhou and colleagues find that commensal viruses have an important function in maintaining intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes, with implications for inflammatory bowel disease.

Glucosylated nanoparticles for the oral delivery of antibiotics to the proximal small intestine protect mice from gut dysbiosis

The encapsulation of antibiotics in glucosylated polymeric nanoparticles that are readily absorbed by the proximal small intestine improves the bioavailability of the antibiotics and limits their exposure to flora in the large intestine.

Potential intestinal infection and faecal–oral transmission of SARS-CoV-2

Although COVID-19 is a respiratory disease and its causative agent, SARS-CoV-2, principally infects the respiratory tract, extrapulmonary manifestations are observed. This Perspective explores the gastrointestinal symptoms associated with COVID-19 and the putative underlying mechanisms, discussing experimental evidence on SARS-COV-2 gastrointestinal infection and the potential for faecal–oral transmission.
