  • The activation of C-C bond of benzocyclobutenones under mild reaction conditions remains a challenge. Herein, the authors report a photoinduced catalyst-free regio-specific bond cleavage of benzocyclobutenones, enabling the generation of ortho-quinoid ketene methides for aza-[4 + 2]-cycloaddition with imines. Catalytic asymmetric version is also realized with Ni catalysis.

  • The investigation of reactivity of β,γ-unsaturated carbonyl compounds is of great synthetic value, especially in asymmetric transformations. Here, the authors report a catalytic asymmetric tandem isomerization/α-Michael addition of β,γ-unsaturated 2-acyl imidazoles in presence of chiral N,N′-dioxide metal catalysts.

  • Two types of amyloid-β protein (1–42) (Aβ42) fibrils are known to form in the insoluble fraction of diseased human brains. Now, another type of Aβ42 fibril (type III) has been identified in the soluble fraction of Alzheimer’s disease brain using cryo-electron microscopy. These studies also reveal differences in ligand–fibril interactions between fibril types.
