Whether excitatory and inhibitory neural populations in the medial preoptic area of hypothalamus (MPOA) respond differentially under different chronic stress conditions is not fully understood. Here, the authors show that chronic stress induces a disruption of excitation-inhibition balance in mouse MPOA, leading to depression-like states.
