Oxygen deprivation provokes melanoma

Melanoma may be promoted by low oxygen conditions in the skin, which turn on the oxygen-response regulator HIF-1. HIF-1 seems to act in concert with well-established oncoproteins to promote tumorigenesis—a process that responds to the drug rapamycin.

SHMT2 drives glioma cell survival in ischaemia but imposes a dependence on glycine clearance

Tumours are a low-oxygen environment, in this study glioblastoma cells are found to overexpress the serine hydroxymethyltransferase SHMT2; SHMT acts to reduce oxygen consumption, which confers the tumour cells with a survival advantage.
