  • An open question in understanding brain functionality is the emergence of different critical regimes in neural avalanches. By using micro-electrode array recordings and a dynamical neural network model based on realistic biological principles, the authors show that transitions between different critical regimes with different computational capabilities can occur in the early developmental stages of in vitro neural cultures.
