Bicyclic aromatic olefins are promising chromic materials but the equilibrium between their folded and twisted conformers is not well understood. Here, a combination of experimental and computational methods allows measurement of the equilibrium constants and thermodynamic parameters, offering insight into their chromic behaviour.
