Rania Francis et al. develop a new strategy for the identification and isolation of giant viruses in real time by using optimized algorithms targeting infected amebas in co-cultures. This new approach, which does not require sequencing techniques, is highly sensitive and 100-fold faster than other high throughput procedures.
