  • The authors describe the mechanism of exo-endocytosis coupling at synapses. They find that actin forms a ring around the region of exocytosis. This ring conserves membrane area, allowing induction of inward membrane buckling following exocytosis.

  • Mitochondria and peroxisomes require a dynamin-like GTPase to remodel membranes during division. Here the authors identify DYNAMO1, a nucleoside diphosphate kinase-like protein that generates a local source of GTP to promote constriction of the division machinery and produce daughter organelles.

  • Kato et al. show that red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae aurora kinase CmAUR regulates mitochondrial division by phosphorylating mitochondrial division ring components. Depletion of the evolutionarily conserved phosphorylation site on CmAUR targets causes defective mitochondrial divisions, suggesting an ancient origin of this regulation during endosymbiosis.
