Practical photon number detection with electric field-modulated silicon avalanche photodiodes

With ever more experiments involving ever fewer photons, there is increasing need for detectors capable of accurately resolving low numbers of photons. By modulating the electric field on a silicon avalanche diode, Thomaset al. show a high-speed device that can discriminate signals from just a few photons.

A fast X-ray transient from a weak relativistic jet associated with a type Ic-BL supernova

The Einstein Probe has discovered a fast X-ray transient, EP240414a, associated with a broad-lined type Ic supernova. Its unusually soft spectrum and weak jet add to the diversity of stellar deaths and suggest a previously unknown Wolf–Rayet star explosion mechanism.

Soft X-ray prompt emission from the high-redshift gamma-ray burst EP240315a

The death of massive stars has traditionally been discovered by explosive events in the gamma-ray band. Liu et al. show that the sensitive wide-field monitor on board Einstein Probe can reveal a weak soft-X-ray signal much earlier than gamma rays.

Quantum key distribution without detector vulnerabilities using optically seeded lasers

Quantum cryptography immune from detector attacks is realized by the development of a source of indistinguishable laser pulses based on optically seeded gain-switched lasers. Key rates exceeding 1 Mb s⁻¹ are demonstrated in the finite-size regime.

Measurement of the inelastic proton–proton cross-section at √s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The measurement of the total cross-section of proton–proton collisions is of fundamental importance for particle physics. Here, the first measurement of the inelastic cross-section is presented for proton–proton collisions at an energy of 7 teraelectronvolts using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider.

Observation of the rare B_s⁰ →µ⁺µ⁻ decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

Combined analysis of proton-proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN by the CMS and LHCb collaborations leads to the observation of the extremely rare decay of the strange B meson into muons; the result is compatible with the standard model of particle physics, and does not show any signs of new physics, such as supersymmetry.
