Measurement of central corneal thickness (CCT) is of ever increasing importance to glaucoma specialists. Studies indicate that measurements of intraocular pressure (IOP), especially when taken by applanation tonometry, are influenced by corneal thickness. A recent meta-analysis showed that a 10% difference in CCT would result in an average of 3.4±0.9 mmHg difference in IOP (1.1 mmHg for normal eyes, 2.5 mmHg for chronically diseased eyes, and 10.0 mmHg in eyes with acute onset active disease).1 Moreover, the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS) outlined the powerful predictive value of corneal thickness measurements in determining the risk to eyes with ocular hypertension of developing primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).2 These important findings may influence aspects of routine glaucoma care, and it is clear that some form of CCT measurement should be included as a standard test in all patients undergoing screening for glaucoma.
