The second quarter of 2009 saw a slight uptick in hiring at the 25 largest biotechs (Table 1), whereas pharma hiring stayed flat (Table 2) compared with 1Q 2009 (Nat. Biotechnol. 27, 395, 2009), according to three representative job databases for the sector. More worrying was the spate of job reductions over the last three months among micro- and small-cap biotechs (Table 3), which proceeded as predicted. Nature Biotechnology will continue to follow hiring and firing trends in the coming year.
