Odour perception begins in the olfactory epithelium, where odorants bind to the receptors of olfactory sensory neurons. The axons of these neurons project to olfactory bulb glomeruli, where they form synapses with the dendrites of mitral and tufted cells. However, little is known about how these cells project to the basal frontal and medial temporal lobes, sometimes referred to as the primary olfactory cortex.

Using thymidine analogues, the authors labelled cells in the mouse olfactory bulb in the S phase of the cell cycle and examined the distribution of mitral cells with different birthdates. By postnatal day 0, cells generated at embryonic day 10 (E10) were mostly located in the dorsomedial mitral cell layer (MCL), whereas the majority of E12-generated cells were located in the ventrolateral MCL.
