The largest study to date comparing open, laparoscopic, and robotic radical prostatectomy (RP) has shown that rates of positive surgical margins (PSMs) are similar for all three approaches, and might be slightly lower for minimally invasive procedures compared with open surgery.

22,393 patients from 14 institutions in Europe, the USA, and Australia participated in the study; 9,778 received open RP, 4,918 received laparoscopic RP, and 7,697 underwent robotic RP from 2000 to 2011. Crude margin rates were 13.8%, 16.3%, and 22.8% for robotic, laparoscopic, and open RP, respectively, although these differences were ameliorated after statistical analysis.
