A new direction for conductive 2D COF films

Stretchable electronics require materials that are both flexible and conductive. π-conjugated two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have potential to fit the bill, as they can conduct charge and their molecular structures are easily designable. However, without proper synthetic control, these frameworks tend to assemble randomly rather than form ordered crystalline films.

Writing in Nature Communications, Jianyi Chen, Yunqi Liu and colleagues devise an interfacial synthesis that pre-organizes planar precursors perpendicularly to a substrate, then polymerizes them while they are still aligned thanks to a cleverly induced Marangoni effect.
