Bottom, histogram with mean ± s.e.m. values from all subjects (n = 10 for pre- and post-run, n = 6 for recovery) showing significant MWF reduction in white and grey matter areas 1–2 days after the marathon, and subsequent recovery to pre-run levels during two months of recovery. Individual data points for each histogram bar (n = 20 for pre- and post-run, n = 12 for recovery) originated from the two hemispheres in each subject.
