A Meissner current is the resistance-free flow of charge induced by magnetic field in a superconductor. Here, the authors observe that Meissner currents flowing through an area containing a pinning centre generate two opposite-sense current half-loops that produce a bound vortex–antivortex pair.

In order to explore superconductivity in hydride materials, local magnetometry inside a diamond anvil cell is performed with sub-micron spatial resolution at megabar pressures using nitrogen-vacancy colour centres.

NV center-based quantum sensors integrated into diamond anvil cells have enabled magnetic imaging under high pressure but are less suited for studying magnetic van der Waals materials. Here, the authors demonstrate magnetic imaging of micrometer-sized flakes of 1T-CrTe2 under high pressure using spin-centers in a thin hBN layer.

By designing superconducting materials the behavior of supercurrents can be controlled to give different emergent behavior. Ge et al. fabricate superconducting films in which currents form geometrically frustrated magnetic dipoles that can be tuned further by coupling to a vortex lattice.

The authors introduce a new spectroscopic technique for studying Higgs modes in superconductors and apply it to a cuprate superconductor. The method involves a soft quench of the Mexican-Hat potential, populating Higgs modes of different symmetries, which are then probed by non equilibrium anti-Stokes Raman scattering.

A time-dependent magnetic field expulsion was measured in optically driven YBa₂Cu₃O_6.48 above the equilibrium superconducting transition temperature and all the way to room temperature. 

Recently, an orbital Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state was predicted and identified in thin flakes of the transition metal dichalcogenide superconductor 2H-NbSe₂. Here, the authors present experimental evidence of the formation of this orbital FFLO state in bulk 2H-NbSe₂ samples.

The electromagnetic response of dipole superfluids, including potential analogues to the Meissner effect, remains poorly understood. This paper develops a phenomenological theory and shows that magnetic-dipole superfluids form vortex lattices separated by singular domain walls with concentrated electric charge, while electric-dipole superfluids exhibit vortex lattices resembling those in conventional superconductors.

There are several classes of sensory neuron that contribute to pain states. Here, the authors demonstrate that TrkB⁺ sensory neurons detect light touch under normal conditions in mice but contribute to hypersensitivity in models of chronic pain, and that ligand-guided laser ablation of TrkB⁺ sensory neurons in the mouse skin attenuates this hypersensitivity.

Superconducting vortex droplets in a mesoscopic superconductor disintegrate in the same way as the charged liquid droplets studied by Lord Rayleigh, revealing dynamics similar to thunder clouds, atomic nuclei and trapped ultracold atoms.

Here the authors use neutron grating interferometry to investigate the nucleation and phase changes of an intermediate mixed state in a niobium superconductor.

The structure of the superconducting gap of iron pnictide superconductors is controversial. In this paper, angle-resolved specific heat measurements are used to show that the gap is anisotropic, which is consistent with an extended s-wave model of superconducting pairing.

Superconductivity in hydrides has been primarily explored by electrical transport measurements. Here, the authors perform SQUID magnetometry under extreme high-pressure and report characteristic superconducting parameters for Im-3m-H₃S and Fm-3m- LaH₁₀—the representative members of two families of high-temperature superconducting hydrides.

Zero-energy flat bands indicate topological origin but their presence is usually energetically unfavorable. Here, Holmvall et al. propose an order parameter to quantify a phase transition associated with exotic topological properties in high-temperature superconductors hosting such flat bands.

To realize ultra-fast dynamics of superconducting vortices one needs to overcome the practical issue of flux-flow instability (FFI). Here, Dobrovolskiy et al. demonstrate ultra-fast vortex motion at 10-15 km/s velocity in a Nb-C superconductor where the FFI is described by the edge-controlled FFI model.

Superconductivity, zero-resistance electrical transport, exists up to temperatures above 150 K in mercury-based cuprates under pressure. Here, the authors revisit the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature in these materials and find a strong dependence on initial doping.

Many autoimmune and genetic causes of sporadic late-onset cerebellar ataxia (SLOCA) can now be identified, but some individuals remain categorized as having idiopathic SLOCA. Wirth and colleagues discuss advanced genomic techniques that might identify additional ‘missing’ SLOCA causes, potential prognostic biomarkers and progress towards effective treatments.

External strain is a versatile tool to enhance charge carrier mobility in transistor devices. Here Hiroshiet al.demonstrate that at low temperatures strain in an organic transistor device can be used to induce a superconducting state.

It is well known that strain can modify the critical temperature below which a material becomes superconducting. Engelmann et al. show that strain does not just modify the critical temperature of iron pnictides but can induce superconductivity in the otherwise non-superconducting undoped phase of BaFe₂As₂.

Ideal tunnel junctions require high-quality, defect-free insulating barriers. Here, the authors demonstrate that van der Waals tunnel barriers atop bulk and ultrathin superconducting NbSe₂ sustain a stable tunneling current and allow mapping of the spectral evolution of layered superconductors.

A spectral study on a ferromagnet/superconductor heterostructure reveals the interaction between the spin-wave excitations in a magnetically ordered system (magnons) and the magnetic flux quanta formed in a superconductor (fluxons).

Here, Embon et al. use a unique scanning microscopy technique to image steady-state penetration of super-fast vortices into a superconducting Pb film at rates of tens of GHz and velocities up to tens of km/s.
