An increased understanding of basic immunology, combined with the identification of various tumour-associated antigens, has fuelled the development of novel immunotherapy approaches for various cancers, including prostate cancer. In this Review, Karan and colleagues describe various active immunotherapy approaches that have the potential to transform the way in which patients with prostate cancer are treated. They also highlight future areas of research that might help to improve the efficacy of immunotherapy for prostate cancer.
