Quantum oscillations of nitrogen atoms in uranium nitride

Crystals containing atoms with widely disparate masses can exhibit unusual lattice dynamics. Using time-of-flight neutron scattering, Aczelet al. show that at high frequencies individual nitrogen atoms in uranium nitride behave as independent quantum harmonic oscillators.

Direct observation of dynamic charge stripes in La_2–xSr_xNiO₄

In materials with strongly correlated electrons, charge carriers can separate into stripes of different electronic phases. Here, Anissimova et al. present evidence that in La_2−xSr_xNiO₄these stripes can dynamically fluctuate, which helps to understand phenomena such as insulator–metal transitions.

Evolution of spin excitations into the superconducting state in FeTe_1−xSe_x

A neutron scattering study shows that the spin excitations in both pnictide- and copper-oxide-based superconductors have the same four-fold symmetry. If these excitations do indeed mediate the superconductivity, the two families of materials may be more similar than previously thought.

Phonon localization drives polar nanoregions in a relaxor ferroelectric

Relaxor ferroelectrics are of interest for applications such as actuators and sensors because of their very large electromechanical responses. Here the authors show that phonon localization drives the generation of the polar nanoregions that explain this electromechanical behaviour.

Commensurate antiferromagnetic excitations as a signature of the pseudogap in the tetragonal high-T_c cuprate HgBa₂CuO_4+δ

In the cuprates, antiferromagnetic correlations might be the cause of the pseudogap phenomenon. Here the authors use neutron scattering on the tetragonal cuprate HgBa₂CuO_4+δrevealing commensurate antiferromagnetic excitations as a signature of the pseudogap state.

A gravitational wave observatory operating beyond the quantum shot-noise limit

‘Squeezed light’ enables quantum noise in one aspect of light to be reduced by increasing the noise, or more accurately the quantum uncertainty, of a complementary aspect.
