Baizosediminiarchaeum, a key player in the deep biosphere, builds butanetriol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (BDGT) membrane lipids and feeds on both CO₂ and lignin, revealing a survival strategy in low-energy environments and a unique lipid biomarker for this group.

Uncovering dynamic transcriptional regulation of methanogenesis via single-cell imaging of archaeal gene expression

Thermophilic Hadarchaeota grow on long-chain alkanes in syntrophy with methanogens

Methanogenic hydrocarbon degradation can be carried out by archaea either by coupling alkane oxidation directly to methanogenesis, or in syntrophic associations with bacteria. Here, the authors provide experimental evidence supporting that methanogenic degradation of hydrocarbons can also be mediated by syntrophic cooperation between archaeal partners.

This study shows that iron-bound organic carbon (Fe_R-OC) is generally persistent but can be remobilized during iron reduction and utilized by microbes in subseafloor sediments. This sedimentary Fe_R-OC pool may contribute to regulating Earth’s carbon cycle.

COVID-19 pandemic is a global health risk, but our understanding on the induced durable immunity remains scarce. Here the authors assess antibody responses in 869 convalescent COVID-19 patients to find that specific antibody titers reduce with time, and the RBD-IgG positive rate exceed 70% at 12 month post diagnosis, with male and older patients showing stronger responses.
