Cofactor-independent photo-enzymatic reductions with water mediated by reductive graphene quantum dots

Enzymatic reductions catalyzed by reductases generally depend on reduced nicotinamide cofactors as a hydride source. In this work, the authors report a hybrid photo-biocatalyst system based on infrared light, responsive reductive graphene quantum dots and cross-linked aldo-keto reductase for performing the direct transfer of hydrogen from water to prochiral substrates.

SAMD9 senses cytosolic double-stranded nucleic acids in epithelial and mesenchymal cells to induce antiviral immunity

Sensing of cytosolic RNA or DNA can lead to innate responses, but little information is available for RNA/DNA dual sensors. Quantification of the troposphere-to-ionosphere charge transfer in a gigantic jet

Gigantic jets emerge from the top of thunderstorms and extend all the way to the ionosphere at altitudes of 90 km. Simultaneous video images and magnetic field measurements of a gigantic jet demonstrate an electric charge transfer between the thunderstorm and the ionosphere that is comparable to that observed in cloud-to-ground lightning.
