Song, Chang et al. identify miR-494-3p as a protector of colitis in mice. They find that a cytokine–cytokine receptor, miR-494-3p-targeted EDA2R and its ligand EDA-A2 derived from macrophages, suppresses colonic stemness and epithelial repair in colitis crypts. This study illustrates how macrophage-induced impairment of intestinal stem cells aggravates intestinal inflammation via miRNA.
