While much research has been devoted to enhancing the activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for hydrogen production systems, less attention has been paid to optimizing their cost and long-term stability. Here, the authors engineer an OER electrode from inexpensive and abundant stainless steel and demonstrate an electrode self-replenishing concept in which a Ni-rich catalyst layer is regenerated from a metallic substrate under OER conditions.
