Efficient cellular transformation via protein delivery through the protrusion-derived extracellular vesicles

The efficiency of protein transfer by extracellular vesicles (EVs) remains unclear. Here, authors show that EVs from cell protrusions deliver functional Rac1 and genome-editing enzymes more efficiently than well-studied endosome-derived EVs, highlighting their potential as delivery tools.

A red fluorescent genetically encoded biosensor for in vivo imaging of extracellular l-lactate dynamics

l-lactate is a key metabolite supporting neuronal activity, but methods to monitor l-lactate dynamics alongside neuronal activity in vivo have been limited. Staphylococcus aureus ST764-SCCmecII high-risk clone in bloodstream infections revealed through national genomic surveillance integrating clinical data

Authors present results from a national surveillance in Japan that found MRSA strains causing bloodstream infections are predominantly from three clonal lineages. They also identified the emergence of highest 30-day-mortality MRSA clone ST764-SCCmecII and traced its evolutionary path.

MicroRNA-33 regulates sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 expression in mice

The micro-RNA miR-33 is encoded by an intron of the gene encoding sterol regulatory-binding protein 2 (SREBP-2) and controls cholesterol homoeostasis. Here, Horie et al.identify SREBP-1 as a target of miR-33 and show that deletion of miR-33 promotes diet-induced obesity and liver steatosis in mice.

Nonvesicular extracellular RNA (nex-RNA) that are not packed in extracellular vesicles is detected outside the cell, but it is poorly understood. Bcl-2-like protein 13 is a mammalian Atg32 homologue that mediates mitophagy and mitochondrial fragmentation

Atg32 is required for mitophagy in yeast, however, a mammalian homologue of this protein has not been identified. Murakawaet al. identify Bcl-2-like protein 13 as a functional homologue of Atg32 in mammalian cells, and show that this protein can rescue mitophagy in Atg32-deficient yeast cells.
