Influenza antibody breadth and effector functions are immune correlates from acquisition of pandemic infection of children

In this study, the authors assessed influenza-specific antibody responses in a cohort of seasonally vaccinated children and report that seasonal vaccination is beneficial by enhancing pandemic influenza virus-specific antibodies and cross-reactive effector functions.

A(H2N2) and A(H3N2) influenza pandemics elicited durable cross-reactive and protective antibodies against avian N2 neuraminidases

Using more than 300 serum samples from individuals with an age range of 1-88 years old, the authors here show that older adults possess higher breadth of antibody reactivity to avian influenza virus (AIV) neuraminidases, potentially explaining the age-specific risks of AIV human infections.

HIV-1 vaccination by needle-free oral injection induces strong mucosal immunity and protects against SHIV challenge

Oral vaccination is a potential option to elicit systemic and mucosal immunity against HIV. Here, Jones et al. show that oral vaccination with a modified needle-free injector induces protective immunity against SHIV in non-human primates and is superior to topical application of vaccines to oral tissues.

Understanding the physiological role and cross-interaction network of VapBC35 toxin-antitoxin system from Mycobacterium tuberculosis

This study characterizes the VapBC35 TA system from M. tuberculosis. The VapBC35 TA system contributes to M. tuberculosis survival in oxidative stress but is not required for growth in guinea pigs.

Deciphering the role of VapBC13 and VapBC26 toxin antitoxin systems in the pathophysiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

The ectopic expression of VapC13 and VapC26 results in transcriptional reprogramming of M. tuberculosis. Both, VapBC13 and VapBC26 TA systems are dispensable for infection in guinea pigs, suggesting a degree of functional redundancy in M. tuberculosis.
