The origin of hypervelocity white dwarfs in the merger disruption of He–C–O white dwarfs

Mergers of two hybrid He–C–O white dwarfs can trigger a double detonation and eject a hypervelocity (2,000 km s⁻¹) remnant. This finding provides a possible origin for the fastest white dwarfs and faint, peculiar supernovae.

A super-Chandrasekhar mass type Ia supernova progenitor at 49 pc set to detonate in 23 Gyr

This study reports the characterization of a double white dwarf that will explode as a type Ia supernova on our Galactic doorstep. Given that the source is so close, this event would outshine all stars in the sky, with an apparent magnitude of −16.

Quiescent ultra-diffuse galaxies in the field originating from backsplash orbits

Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the ΛCDM Universe show that isolated quenched ultra-diffuse galaxies are formed as backsplash galaxies that were once satellites of another galactic group or cluster halo but are today a few megaparsecs away from them.
