Researchers uncover how plants control the stereochemistry of steroidal alkaloids, key compounds in defense. They show that evolution of GAME8 enzymes in Solanum species has shaped alkaloid diversity, including cases of reverse evolution in wild tomatoes.

A NAC triad modulates plant immunity by negatively regulating N-hydroxy pipecolic acid biosynthesis

Cai et al. demonstrated that the NAC90 transcription factor negatively regulates plant immunity by repressing NHP and SA biosynthesis genes. NAC90 interacts with NAC61 and NAC36, forming a regulatory triad that controls NHP production and balances plant growth and defense trade-off.

Plant cholesterol biosynthetic pathway overlaps with phytosterol metabolism

Plants contain small levels of cholesterol. Analysis of transcripts, proteins and individual gene silencing in tomato identifies a biosynthetic pathway involving 12 enzymes that is shown to be functional by expression of the full set in Arabidopsis.

During tomato fruit ripening, bitter and toxic steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs) are converted to nonbitter and less toxic forms, but proposed acylating enzyme in pathway remain unknown.
