Structural evolution of liquid silicates under conditions in Super-Earth interiors

Combining laser-driven shock compression and ultra-short X-ray pulses from LCLS, the local structure of liquid silicates was determined up to 385 GPa. Compared with molecular dynamics calculations, continuous densification of O-O and Mg-Si networks may alter melt properties and impact planetary differentiation.

PML inhibits HIF-1α translation and neoangiogenesis through repression of mTOR

The tumour suppressor gene PML is shown to normally restrain angiogenesis, both in tumours and under ischaemic conditions. This involves a new pathway in which during hypoxia, PML regulates mTOR and the transcription factor HIF-1α

Atomistic deformation mechanism of silicon under laser-driven shock compression

Understanding the how silicon deforms under pressure is important for several fields, including planetary science and materials design. Laser-driven shock compression experiments now confirm that shear stress generated during compression is released via a high-pressure phase transition.

Germline NPM1 mutations lead to altered rRNA 2′-O-methylation and cause dyskeratosis congenita

NPM1 regulates ribosomal RNA 2′-O-methylation by binding to small nucleolar RNAs, thereby modulating translation. NPM1 mutations lead to altered 2′-O-methylation and impaired ribosomal function, resulting in bone marrow failure and leukemia susceptibility.
