  • Identifying different phenotypes of osteoarthritis is currently a subject of much research; however, a new systematic review has sparked discussion about the discrepancies in how research into disease phenotypes is conducted. Can we define individual phenotypes if we cannot agree on what constitutes a phenotype in the first place?

  • Skeletal abnormalities of the hip can place unnecessary stress on structures within the hip. One of these abnormalities, in which the head of the femur develops a cam-shaped outgrowth, has been associated with the subsequent development of osteoarthritis. In this Perspectives, the etiology of cam abnormalities and their contribution to osteoarthritis are discussed.

  • Cam morphology can cause intra-articular joint damage and lead to femoroacetabular impingement syndrome and eventually hip osteoarthritis. This Review explores the development and effect of cam morphology on femoroacetabular impingement syndrome and hip osteoarthritis, discussing relevant terminology, diagnostic approaches, pathophysiological insights and management strategies.

  • The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant is associated with less severe disease but less is known about variant-specific risk of long-term complaints. Monitoring 1.3 million individuals from Norway for post-acute COVID-19 complaints up to 126 days shows that the burden is similar for Omicron and Delta for most complaints except for musculoskeletal pain.

  • Aida Bertoli-Avella and colleagues report the identification of SMAD3 mutations in individuals with a syndromic form of aortic aneurysms and dissections with early-onset osteoarthritis. The mutations cause increased aortic expression of components of the TGF-β signaling pathway.
