A distorter–restorer system drives quantitative reproductive isolation in rice

The S44 locus is a unique quadripartite (RID, RIR, RIA and RIS) distorter–restorer system governing reproductive isolation between O. longistaminata and other rice lineages, and knockout of RID can universally overcome S44-mediated reproductive barriers in the AA genome.

In this study, Lyu et al. use a comparative genome approach to identify an allele that is prevalent in upland rice varieties and alters the function of a protein involved in abscisic acid biosynthesis.
