Induction of mitogenic activity in human VSMC by NHDL3 hydrolyzed by gr IIA secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2). Example of 12 experiments in triplicate. ♦ NHDL3 alone 50 μg/ml; ○ NHDL3 + sPLA2 2 ng/ml; ▪ NHDL3 + sPLA2 10 ng/ml; ▾ NHDL3 + sPLA2 20 ng/ml. At 48 hours, NHDL3 vs NHDL3 + sPLA2 10 ng/ml, p < 0.05. At 48 hours, HDL3 vs HDL3 + sPLA2 20 ng/ml, p < 0.01. The sPLA2 range of 2 to 20 ng/ml is equivalent to 80 to 800 U/ml. Such concentrations are similar to those in human serum and are observed in arterial atherosclerotic areas.
