Nasopharyngeal Surfactant Administration to Prevent Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Dear Editor:

We read with interest Kattwinkel et al.'s1 article “Technique for Intrapartum Administration of Surfactant without Requirement for an Endotracheal Tube”, and applaud the authors for their efforts in this feasibility study investigating early, easy techniques to reduce the incidence of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). In the event, the authors or others wish to pursue investigation of the utility of this technique, we wish to raise certain issues that need to be addressed as part of investigating the feasibility of applying this technique in clinical practice.
