The combined effects of annulation and halogenation lead to a shift of absorption from 571 to 758 nm. The spectrum of 15b is almost superimposable onto that of 15c. The halo-substitution in both tetracenes and in pentacenes leads to significant redshifts in absorption. Chlorine and bromine substituents are equally effective.
