Mitotic entry requires dephosphorylation and thereby activation of cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (Cdk1). The timing of Cdk1 activation is directly controlled by the inhibitory kinase Wee1 and the activating phosphatase Cdc25. The roles of their budding yeast homologues Swe1 and Mih1, respectively, are conserved and have been proposed to constitute a cell size checkpoint that allows cells to divide at the appropriate size.

The speed of this signalling response suggests that this checkpoint directly monitors membrane traffic
