Asphyxiated neonates resuscitation with room air (RAR) vs.oxygen

Background: RAR⁽¹⁾ has been effective in perinatal asphyxia and should be less harmful-than O2. Design: Prospective, randomized, double blind clinical study. Subjects: AGA term neonates with moderate intrapartum asphyxia (1' Apgar:3-5) divided in: A (control), B (RAR) and C (O2R). Measurements: Blood was obtained intrapartum, at 72hr and 30d. Variables indicating oxidative stress were measured as GSH/GSSG ratio, glutahione peroxidase (GPx), reductase (GRed) superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (Cat), and 8-oxo-dG expressed in units as previously described^(2,3,4). Results: (Table) Conclusions: RAR seems to be less harmful than O2 resuscitation short/long term. We do not speculate on implications.
