Aim: It has been shown that body size at one year was positively associated to BMC in adults. However BMC depends on body size, and we therefore examined the association between growth velocity during infancy and size adjusted BMC at 10 y of life. Subjects and measurements: Weight was measured at birth and at the age of 9 months in 141 infants (males 63). At the age of 10 years 105 (males 51) participated in a follow up study. Whole body BMC and bone area (BA) were determined by DXA and calcium intake by 7 days record. Results: BMC was size adjusted (SABMC) for BA, height, and weight by multiple linear regression1. The influence of weight gain from birth to the age of 9 months ()W9M) was analysed after controlling for birth weight, sex (F/M), age, pubertal stage, and dietary calcium intake. SABMC at 10 y was significantly positively associated to calcium intake (p=.007) and male sex (+2.4%, p=.009), and highly significantly negatively associated to )W9M (p=.003).
