Training matters

What motivates professionals, having achieved their primary career goals, to develop their clinical skills even further? Back in 1959, the psychologist Frederick Herzberg and colleagues published the two-factor model of work motivation.1 He concluded that a person's satisfaction and dissatisfaction with any particular job was affected by two different sets of factors.

The hygiene factor - so called because they avoided unpleasantness in the workplace - included salary, working conditions, supervision and interpersonal relationships. The theory also recognised a set of motivational factors2 which led to greater job satisfaction and included:

  • Advancement

  • Work itself

  • Possibility of growth

  • Responsibility

  • Recognition

  • Achievement.
