Owner fatigue in dentistry: Understanding the syndrome and its impact

Owner fatigue is an under-recognised but increasingly prevalent occupational phenomenon in dentistry. While many practitioners embrace the rewards of practice ownership, the sustained demands on time, decision-making capacity, and personal resilience can erode wellbeing and compromise professional and commercial outcomes.

The World Health Organisation's ICD-11 describes burnout as an occupational phenomenon characterised by energy depletion, increased mental distance from work, and reduced professional efficacy-not a medical diagnosis but a work-related state warranting structural solutions.1
