Manchester has a heritage of innovation and change - The Industrial Revolution, The Suffrage movement and Alan Turing to name a few. This is no different in the medical field; in 1904, Dr Marie Carmichael Stopes was the University's first female lecturer and became a pioneer in family planning.1 Also, in 1904, Dr Catherine Chisholm became the first woman to qualify in medicine at the University of Manchester, she later went on to open her own hospital.1 This heritage is ongoing, Manchester continues to change, however, there are still issues relating to inequalities regarding the accessibility to education in Manchester which is mirrored nationwide; we discuss this problem and a wave of change on the horizon.
