The appropriate referral of patients by GDPs for orthodontic treatment under the NHS has been an ongoing challenge.1 This is particularly pertinent now with extensive post-pandemic waiting lists and the need to manage patients' expectations enhanced by their video use. Following its introduction,2 the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) has been taken up by the NHS as a means of rationalising orthodontic treatment to those with the greatest dental health and aesthetic need. The IOTN has been taught and examined comprehensively in undergraduate dental courses for many years; however, the level of knowledge at undergraduate stage3 is likely to diminish post-qualification.4
