Reply to age inaccuracies in an epidemiological study of paediatric and adult optic neuritis

We would like to thank Yu, Lin, and Wang for their close review of our findings and their thoughtful suggestions. After revisiting the dataset and reviewing the current functionality within TriNetX, we agree with the observation that there is a meaningful difference between applying the ‘current age’ filter and using the age filter linked to a specific ICD-10 diagnosis code. At the time of our initial analysis, our understanding was that using the ‘current age’ filter in combination with a defined time window (e.g. Jan 1, 2016 to Dec 31, 2016) would accurately identify individuals within the specified age range during that period.

It is important to note that the data for this study were collected in March 2024, and TriNetX’s capabilities have since evolved. We are uncertain whether the functionality to link age directly to a specific diagnosis was available at the time of our data extraction. Since the time of data collection for this study, TriNetX has introduced a new incidence and prevalence analytic feature, which automates aspects of this analysis that previously required manual query construction.
