  1. Continuous data meeting normal distribution were described as mean ± standard deviation and an analysis of variance (independent t test) was performed to compare the differences among the four groups (between the two groups). Otherwise median (Q1, Q3) and the Kruskal–Wallis H-test (Mann–Whitney U-test) was used. Categorical data were described as number of cases (%) and a χ2 test or A Fisher’s exact test was selected to compare the differences
  2. HR hypertensive retinopathy, BMI body mass index, SBP systolic blood pressure, DBP diastolic blood pressure, TC total cholesterol, TG triglyceride, HDL-C high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, LDL-C low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, FPG fasting plasma glucose, Creatinine serum creatinine, EGFR estimated glomerular filtration rate, ACR urine albumin creatinine ratio, Cardiovascular history of cardiovascular events, Agents antihypertensive agents, Duration duration of hypertension
  3. aStatistically different compared with controls (P < 0.05)
  4. bStatistically different compared with grade I HR (P < 0.05)
  5. cStatistically different compared with grade II HR (P < 0.05)
