Sodium excretion per nephron and nighttime hypertension in patients with IgA nephropathy

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a loss of diurnal blood pressure variation, which is hypothesized to be partly due to impaired sodium excretion [1, 2]. To date, this hypothesis has not been fully elucidated in terms of its relevance to decreased nephron mass, which is a common feature in patients with CKD.

Previous studies on IgA nephropathy (IgAN) have identified links between ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) abnormalities and kidney dysfunction or histopathological injuries [3, 4]. We recently reported nephron number estimates in patients with IgAN [5]. As a subanalysis of our data, we estimated single-nephron sodium excretion in patients with IgAN.
