Depth profiles of selected pore water constituents in the sediment cores. Core a: SF17-04; core b: GH15-03; core c: SF17-05; core d: CQ14-02 (reference core not affected by diapirism). Core a and c from above the diapir show deviations from normal diagenetic trends (core d). In both cores, pore water Sr concentrations increase continuously with depth; in core a, this trend is accompanied by depletion in Cl (and other elements that typically behave conservative at this depth below the seafloor). These geochemical anomalies provide evidence for fluid advection (affected probably by mineral dewatering and other deep-seated geochemical processes) and suggest a direct relation to the observed diapirism.
