The 1974 eruption is related to one of the greatest seismic crises ever registered on Mt. Etna. We interpret that seismicity started due to magma intrusion, recorded by the crystallisation of Cr-rich rims. Magma mobilisation fits the timing of the deepest earthquake, and ascent to the surface is recorded by Cr-poor outermost rims
