Optical microscopy images (scale bars 540 µm) of surfaces generated by ion soft landing of [B12Cl12]2- with a partial and b complete substitution of the adventitious hydrocarbons with sublimed glycine. a Partial glycine substitution led to slower and incomplete dewetting (compare with Fig. 3b), b full substitution with glycine resulted in a stable grainy layer that showed no change under ambient conditions
