Neural drift during two verbal memory tasks. a During the paired associates task, pairs of words are sequentially presented on the screen. During retrieval, one word from each pair is presented in random order, and participants are instructed to vocalize the associated word. Each session consisted of up to 25 lists of this encoding-distractor-recall procedure. b During the free recall task, single words are sequentially presented. During retrieval, participants are instructed to vocalize remembered words, in any order.
