The studies are ordered by community asexual prevalence (shown by the percentage under the study name), with the lowest at the top. The density plots show the gametocyte densities (by PCR) of individuals with patent asexual (red) and subpatent asexual (blue) infections. *Indicates statistical significance for the two tests described in the methods. There is poor comparability of gametocyte densities between different laboratories, therefore the plots in the right column should be used to compare between the patent and subpatent parasite density distributions in each study, rather than distributions between studies.
