Schematic illustration of the experimental setup. Samples of pre-formed microtubules were injected across a focused X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) beam. Diffraction data were recorded on a CSPAD X-ray detector which was read out at 120 Hz, which matched the incoming repetition rate of the XFEL. Under the experimental conditions approximately twenty microtubules were intercepted by the X-ray beam as it passed through the microjet.
