Proposed function for MpsAB. We proposed that MpsAB represents a sodium bicarbonate cotransporter (NBC). These transporters are prevalent in mammalians and are expressed throughout the body. Unlike CO2 which can diffuse passively in and out of the cells, bicarbonate (HCO3) needs to be transferred into the cells via a transporter. In S. aureus, MpsAB most likely function together as cotransporter to transport Na+ and HCO3. Me2+ indicates a metal binding site in MpsB
