Proposed function for MpsAB. We proposed that MpsAB represents a sodium bicarbonate cotransporter (NBC). These transporters are prevalent in mammalians and are expressed throughout the body. Unlike CO2 which can diffuse passively in and out of the cells, bicarbonate (HCO3−) needs to be transferred into the cells via a transporter. In S. aureus, MpsAB most likely function together as cotransporter to transport Na+ and HCO3−. Me2+ indicates a metal binding site in MpsB
