Whole-cell metabolic adder of hippurate and benzaldehyde. a Hippurate and benzaldehyde transducers are combined to build a metabolic adder producing a common output, benzoate, which is reported through the benzoate actuator. The genes encoding the enzymes are expressed in one operon under control of constitutive promoter J23101 and RBSs B0032 for HipO and B0034 for vdh. b Heatmap representing the output of the adder while increasing the concentration of both inputs, hippurate and benzaldehyde. All data points are the mean of normalized values from measurements taken from three different colonies on the same day. c Model simulations for experimental conditions presented in b. The model was fitted on transducer data and resource competition data. Source data are provided in the Source Data file
